• The One Move Shoulder Saver Also known as the “Swimmer Hover” Or, even, the “Prone Swimmer.” When it comes to having healthy shoulders, we never want mobility at the cost of stability. Because the shoulder is a ball-and-socket joint with limited physical interferences, it actually has some of the most range of motion of any joint in the body. This means a lot of mobilizing without an equal focus on stabilizing can potentially lead to issues. Most shoulder issues initiate from one of two places: Weakness and limited ability to control the rotation of the upper arm (rotator cuff (RC) muscles) and, 2) Weakness and limited ability to control and stabilize the shoulder blades. When you lose these normal strengths and functions, you end up compensating in other ways when trying to achieve an adequate range of motion at the shoulder. And, since the shoulder naturally has so much mobility… It’s easy to accidentally do this. This can lead to RC injuries, shoulder impingements, frayed biceps tendons, constant nagging tight traps, and more. Mostly due to compensations rooted in inadequate strength and/or mobility in other places. To address these potential problems and increase shoulder durability we need a movement that is: 1. Safe to start when there is already limited mobility present. 2. Incorporates muscles that create rotation and stability in the shoulder. 3. Is useful regardless of the current level of mobility (it’s good for 0/10’s and 10/10’s). 4. Looks good on camera. 5. (just kidding about #4) This move can help improve mobility, stability, shoulder health, and posture. But you should know - this is also NOT coming from a physical therapy point of view (because I’m not one). If you have a current injury - see a PT. If you’re currently in pain - see a PT. And if you aren’t sure - see a PT. They are some of the most important professionals for this exact reason: Just sitting around and doing nothing almost never fixes the problem… Safe movement does. So, if you’re looking for a way to improve your shoulders… Incorporate these into your daily routine. I promise you’ll see (and feel) the benefits. • Posted @withregram • @cam.rickerby Having issues with a stiff upper back& shoulders? Many people complain about tight shoulders, but they might not be as rigid as you believe. Shoulders are naturally flexible, sometimes even feeling a bit loose. Often, what feels like a shoulder problem is actually related to posture. If you’re facing this, you might lack: Proper extension in your upper back. Correct positioning of your shoulder blades. Sufficient movement of your shoulder blades. By committing to 1 min per day on each of these exercises you can alleviate arm and shoulder pain. Plus, improving upper back mobility which can enhance your throwing and swinging abilities, especially for golfers. A strong spine also supports long-term health.
