Kris Kristofferson was a standout college football player and amateur boxer, with peers believing he could have turned professional in either sport.
However, a college literature professor encouraged the 21-year-old to apply for a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford, which he won.
"It’s where I developed my love of writing, both literature and music," he later recalled of his time abroad.
After earning his degree, Kristofferson had numerous university teaching positions available but shocked friends and family by joining the Army Rangers instead.
"I came from a military family and felt a sense of obligation to serve," he explained. During his four-year service, he flew helicopters and was offered a teaching position at West Point but declined to pursue a music career.
Moving to Nashville, Kristofferson worked in obscurity until Johnny Cash recorded one of his songs, launching his rise to stardom.
