Astăzi, 8 iunie, se împlinesc 103 ani de la primul meci din istorie al echipei naționale de fotbal a României Echipa națională de fotbal a României a reușit o performanță remarcabilă chiar din primul meci jucat. Se întâmpla la 8 iunie 1922, când nou înființata echipă națională s-a impus în fața Iugoslaviei. Meciul a fost organizat cu ocazia nunții Regelui Alexandru I al Sârbilor, Croaților și Slovenilor cu Principesa Maria-Mignon a României, la Belgrad. Federația Română de Fotbal a existat încă din anul 1900, însă abia după Unire, fotbalul a avut o reprezentanță reală prin cluburile din Banat și Ardeal, acolo unde s-a născut fotbalul românesc. Echipa României nu s-a temut de vecinii iugoslavi care aveau deja un renume în fotbalul european. Chiar dacă fondurile erau aproape inexistente, selecționata României a făcut tot posibilul să se deplaseze pentru evenimentul sportiv. Jucătorii au purtat un echipament elegant, special comandat în Anglia de lordul Elemer Hirsch, entuziast sponsor de moment al selecționatei. Punându-și ambiția și talentul la încercare, România a reuși să câștige partida cu 2-1. Chiar dacă au fost conduși din minutul 35, românii nu s-au dat bătuți și au adus victoria cu golurile lui Ronay și Aurel Guga. Antrenor a fost Teofil Muraru, zis și „nea Tofi”, sportiv de performanță. Lotul era alcătuit din jucătorii: Aurel Guga, Adalbert Ritter, Lajos Szilágyi, Elemér Hirsch, Dezső Jakobi, Francisc Rónay, Nicolaus Hönigsberger, Franz Zimmermann, Karl Frech, Paul Schiller și Johann Auer.
