  • Ronaldinho scored his iconic first goal for Barcelona against Sevilla on September 3, 2003, during a match that famously kicked off at 5 minutes past midnight.

The Brazilian superstar picked up the ball inside his own half, slalomed past two defenders, and unleashed a ferocious 30-yard strike that went in off the crossbar, causing the stadium to erupt so violently that seismographs recorded a mini-earthquake.

  • Doug Collins Called Michael Jordan the King of Junk Food Eaters. Chicken McNuggets. Coke. Big Mac on the Bus to the Game. Charles Oakley Said He Ate McDonald's Every Single Morning for Breakfast. Every Morning.

Every athlete today has a nutritionist. A meal plan. A chef. A supplement protocol.

    Michael Jordan had McDonald's.

His coach Doug Collins said it without hesitation when someone asked about Jordan's off-season conditioning program.

"He has none. He'll practice for a week, and he'll be ready."

Then Collins gave him a title.

"Michael's the king of junk-food eaters. The guy is Chicken McNuggets and Coke, Big Mac on the bus to the game."

Charles Oakley confirmed it from the inside.

"We ate a lot of McDonald's back then. MJ ate McDonald's every morning for breakfast. Every morning. And before games, he'd eat a steak."

Every morning. Then a steak before games. Then six championships.

Jordan himself described what his actual routine looked like when he was on his best behavior.

"I used to start off with a great breakfast, pancakes, cereal, something of that nature, go to practice, and then workout after practice, gonna have a great meal after practice, and then finish up on a great meal in the evening. On game days, I used to eat my favorite meal, which is four hours before game time, steak and potato, and I felt like that gave me the energy that I needed to go out and play a good, hard basketball game, and have a great recovery time after that."

He didn't mention McDonald's once in that description.

Six championships. Six Finals MVPs. Five regular-season MVPs. The greatest basketball player who ever lived ate Chicken McNuggets and rode the bus to games with a Big Mac.

The modern athlete tracks every macro and hires a private chef.

Jordan grabbed a value meal and averaged 30 points a night for fifteen years.

  • Larry Bird Saw Michael Jordan Complimenting His Players Before the 1998 Eastern Conference Finals and Told His Entire Team Jordan Was Fattening the Calf. The Only Player Who Could Ever Challenge Bird Mentally Was Magic Johnson. Jordan Learned His Tricks From Bird.

1998 Eastern Conference Finals. Indiana Pacers versus Chicago Bulls.

Larry Bird had spent his entire playing career as the most feared psychological competitor in the league. He knew exactly what Jordan was doing the moment it started.

Before the series even tipped off, Jordan began working the room. Complimenting Pacers assistant coach Rick Carlisle. Telling Rik Smits how much he enjoyed playing with him at the All-Star game. Kind words. Genuine-seeming warmth.

Bird gathered his team and shut it down immediately.

"Of course, right before our series, Michael started laying the groundwork for his mind games. He told Rick Carlisle what a great coach he was, he told Rik Smits how much he enjoyed playing with him during the All-Star game. I jumped right on it. I wanted our guys to know he was fattening the calf."

Fattening the calf. Make the player feel good. Make him comfortable. Make him think you respect him so much that when the game starts the edge is already gone.

Bird recognized it because it was his game first. He invented it in French Lick, sharpened it in Boston, deployed it for thirteen seasons against everyone who ever guarded him.

Then Bird also addressed the only opponent who had ever genuinely gotten to him mentally. Not Jordan. Not Isiah. Not anyone in the Eastern Conference.

"I never came up against anyone, other than Magic, who could challenge me mentally. Michael Cooper, who also played for the Lakers, challenged me on defense, but as far as the mental game went, he wasn't on the same plane as Magic. Magic Johnson was the only player that could really get to me."

The Pacers pushed the Bulls to Game 7 before losing. Bird led them to the Finals two years later.

Jordan admitted after his playing career that he learned the psychological side of the game from watching Bird.

The greatest trash talker of his generation had to warn his own team about the man who studied him.
