HANDBAL · SPAIN
ANALYSIS // Why is Spain second in the world, although it has a tiny league, and Romania is OUT in the TOP 10, although it has forces like CSM and SCM Râmnicu Vâlcea?

How did Spain reach 2nd place in the world, although the Iberians have the 15th championship in power in Europe? Hungary and Romania are at the opposite pole, strong championship, weak national!
The Spanish daily Marca has performed an excellent analysis of the internal women's handball competition related to the amazing result achieved by the Spanish national at the World Championship in Japan.
Iberian journalists have tried to find out how it is possible for Spain to reach second place in the world, at national level, although the domestic championship is only 15th in the top of the strong leagues on the old continent.
At the opposite end, how did the nationals of the first two championships, Hungary and Romania, finish outside the Top 10?
THE END OF "CROSSING THE DESERT"?
The economic crisis has hit the world sport deeply. In some countries it was more pronounced than in others. Brand journalists start from the fact that "Division de Honor", the first women's handball league, was ranked in the 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 seasons in 4th place in the world.
Then, for five seasons, the Spanish teams did not play in the Champions League anymore, and the Honor Division collapsed at positions 15-16! Spain only counted in the Challenge Cup, the third competition in importance in Europe!
The lack of money pushed the value players to other more financially powerful leagues. 50 valuable players left Spain, and half of them were Spanish handball players, the core of the Iberian national.
It should be noted, however, that the Spanish teams have still produced valuable players, given as examples the current world champions: Elisabet Cesáreo (20 years), Jennifer Gutiérez (24 years), Ainhoa Hernández (25) or Sayna Mbengue ( 20).
SALARIES BETWEEN 800 AND 2,000 EUROS!
Spain is a semi-amateur league, as stated by Angel Sandoval, the coordinator of women's handball in the Spanish federation, a kind of federal coach from us.
"In 2013, 42 players from the first league had a professional contract. Now, about 60% of the players in the Division of Honor have professional contracts. The average salaries are modest and only international players evolving in Spain receive 2,000 euros. The rest are salaries of 800-1,000 euros, "said Sandoval.
The Spanish Federation has decided, due to the lack of resources, to reduce the number of teams from 14 to 12.
The Spaniards say you can't fight in Europe for trophies with budgets of three or four hundred thousand euros, as the women's teams have. But there are countries that come even below. Sweden and the Netherlands are the examples, because there 90% of the top players evolve abroad.
But the Iberians are aware that the good result of their national team at the World Cup in Japan is only the good result of the selection, but does not present the reality of the domestic league!

ROMANIA
BIG BUDGETS, MANY FOREIGNERS, THE ROMANIANS PAID TOO WELL
In Romania, the situation is exactly the opposite. Supported by local authorities, from public money, the teams have results at European level. As proof of the four qualifying teams in the spring of the European Cups, two of them in the Champions League!
Only the results of the teams come in space, due to the high value of the foreign players evolving in the National League. They are the world's top handball players, among the best in Europe, attracted by the big contracts offered in Romania.
The average budget in the National League is one million euros, twice as large as in Spain. CSM Bucharest has a budget 10 times larger than any Iberian team, and Vâlcea 5 times!
The modest result obtained by Romania at the World Cup in Kumamoto has provoked intense controversy regarding the future of Romanian handball. What needs to be done? Limiting the number of foreign players, new rules regarding the compulsory use of domestic players?
It is certain that the measures imposed by the FRH, with those criteria imposed on the outward transfers, did not bring anything wrong. Moreover, the price of Romanian players, who paid much better than what they show on the field, has artificially increased.
