Clemens Wickler of Germany celebrates a semifinal win at the FIVB World Tour Finals Saturday at the Foro Italico.

Rome, Italy, September 7, 2019 - It's a repeat of the gold medal match two months ago at the beach volleyball world championships as Germany’s Julius Thole/Clemens Wickler meet Russians Viacheslav Krasilnikov/Oleg Stoyanovskiy here Sunday in the finals of US$600,000 FIVB World Tour Finals.

The two teams won a pairs of matches each Saturday on the Foro Italico courts with world champions and the third-seeded Krasilnikov and Stoyanovskiy posting a 2-1 (18-21, 21-18, 15-9) win in 52 minutes over second-seeded Anders Mol and Christian Sorum to snap the Norwegians 24-match FIVB winning streak.

It was the fourth FIVB World Tour meeting between the two teams this season as Mol and Sorum had won the previous two matches in semi-final clashes in the Czech Republic and Poland. Krasilnikov and Stoyanovskiy had defeated the Norwegians in a quarter-final meeting in January in The Hague.

The fifth-seeded Thole and Wickler gained a spot in their third FIVB World Tour finale by posted a 2-0 (26-24, 21-17) win in 53 minutes over 17th-seeded Taylor Crabb and Jake Gibb of the United States. Last month in Moscow, the Americans defeated Thole and Wickler in pool play.

  • Serbian volleyball players defend European title!
Serbian volleyball players defended their European Championship title by defeating Turkey 3-2 in sets.

    LN SOURCE: B92 Photo: CEV

    European Championship Finals:

    Serbia - Turkey 3-2 (21:25, 25:21, 25:21, 22:25, 25:12)
    Hall : Ankara

The Serbs came to victory in the crowded hall in Ankara, by the sets of 21:25, 25:21, 25:21, 22:25, 15:13.

Zoran Terzic's selections continued to deliver unrealistically good results, defending the throne of Europe after becoming world champions last year.

Our volleyball players managed to win a gold medal with all nine championship wins, beating Turkey for the second time in the group stage triumph.

This was the third gold medal for Serbia in the EP in history, also the third in the last five championships (won 2011 gold), with their worst place being fourth.

It is interesting that Serbia started very well in each set, but Turkey did not surrender. Housewives gained the advantage of Serbia almost every single set, but in the end, the world champion showed who he was and what he was - in truth, much more difficult than he should have been.

The Serbs led at the start of the match and played better, but their advantage quickly melted away.

Turkey's right came from nowhere until 8:15 pm, and Serbia was not helped by the end of the set by Maja Ognjenovic's phenomenal service, so the home side surprisingly increased the lead to 1-0.

You can watch the live broadcast of the match via our special with LIVE BLOG .

    Serbia : Busha 7, M. Popovic 11, Mirkovic, MIhajlovic 11, Ognjenovic 1, Veljkovic 2, Bjelica 1, S. popovic, Boskovic 23, Milenkovic 2

    Turkey : Sebnem, Ozbaj 1, Akman 1, Baladin 11, Ismailou 2, Ajdemir 3, Jilmaz 5, Boz 16, Gunes 11, Erdem 9, Jildrim 4, Karakurt 6

Our volleyball players started the second set well, and Brankica Mihajlovic played great. The receiver of the Serbian national team has played excellent in both defense and attack and practically rules herself on the field.

Serbia easily came in with a 20:14 advantage, but the advantage quickly melted away. Boskovic was stopped several times, so the Turks came closer to 23:21.

Still, much to the dismay of the Ankara crowd, Serbia tied two points and tied the game at 1-1.

Turkey's coach Giovanni Guceti brilliantly set up the defense for Tijana Boskovic, the best volleyball player in the world, but that opened up space for her teammates.

Bianka Bush played well in defense, Serbia took the lead in the 3rd set, but Turkey again made up the score and equalized to 15:15.

It got into the new drama, Serbia had 20:18, but the Turks made the transition and then punished Stefana Veljkovic with the first ace after which she eased Serbia to 2-1.

And the fourth set did nothing different than the previous three - Serbia led and played better, but the Turkish women were carried by a phenomenal audience in Ankara.

After a sequence during which Maja Ognjenovic captained the job and brought an advantage to Serbia, the Turkish women were turned over by the excellent Ebrar Karakurt roll.
