The AG Memorial Van Damme has produced 15 new IAAF Diamond League champions on Friday evening. Hink-step-jumper Christian Taylor broke the meeting record dating from 1995. Noah Lyles and Dina Asher-Smith are the sprint stars of the 43rd Memorial.
Former world record holder Willie Banks, who was inaugurated on Thursday in the Hall of Fame of the AG Memorial Van Damme, was an attentive spectator of the hop-and-jump. In a high-level competition, the American Christian Taylor crowned himself as the new Diamond League champion. The two-time Olympic and three-time world champion won with a new meeting record of 17m85. That is 25 cm further than the British Jonathan Edwards in 1995. Taylor's fellow countryman Will Claye finished second on Friday evening with 17m22.
The USA was also up at the men's 200 meters. Noah Lyles became the fourth fastest athlete of all time in the half-lane round at the beginning of July with a time of 19.50. At the Memorial, the 22-year-old American rushed to victory in 19.74. This is also a very good time, especially considering the circumstances. Just when the sprinters got off the starting blocks, it started to rain slightly in Brussels. After the race it dried up, but remained fairly fresh. Lyles made it for the Turk Ramil Guliyev (19.86) and the Canadian Andre De Grasse (19.87).
Europe at the top of the women's sprint. Dina Asher-Smith became the first European and the youngest Diamond League champion ever in the 100 meters. The 23-year-old sprint sensation has written history and that 'writing history' is no coincidence ... Two years ago, Asher-Smith graduated with a university degree in history from King's College in London. In Brussels she flashed to victory in 10.88, her season best and only 3 hundredths above her PR. Two-time Olympic champion and young mum Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce from Jamaica came second in 10.95. Third place went to the Ivorian Marie-Josée Ta Lou in 11.09.
21-YEAR NORMAN CONFIRMS
Top man Michael Norman fulfilled his favorite role in the men's 400 meters. The 21-year-old American, the fastest man in 2019 on the track, beat his fellow countryman Fred Kerley. Norman won in 44.26, Kerley clocked 44.46. Jonathan Sacoor, world champion with the juniors, was allowed to start with a wildcard and finished seventh in 45.72.
