How Qatar’s sporting vision failed at World Athletics
In the midst of the IAAF World Athletics Championship in Qatar, a British journalist wryly observed that even the tumbleweed had failed to turn up to Doha’s Khalifa Stadium. This was reference to another evening at the event during which crowds were so small at the host venue, they seemed almost imperceptible. What should have…

BRAZIL, USA, POLAND TAKE TOP SPOTS AFTER MEN’S WORLD CUP ROUND 1

Brazil still team to beat after five days of play in Men's World Cup

Fukuoka and Nagano, Japan, October 6, 2019 – Reigning Olympic champions Brazil kept a perfect record of all their matches, to take the top spot after Round 1 of the 2019 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Cup.

The Brazilians took their fifth straight win on Sunday with a 3-1 match (27-25, 25-21, 27-25, 25-22) against Iran in Site B Nagano’s White Ring Arena.

In the first set, Iran coach Igor Kolakovic called upon his younger hitters Porya Yali and Amirhossein Esfandiar from the Men's U21 champion team. The Iranian side delivered well on attack and showed they could also convert on blocks. Brazil tried to deliver their serves with pressure and played good defence to keep the contest close.

By the second set, Brazil setter Bruno Rezende ran his offence with Lucas Saatkamp converting effectively on the middle attack. Ricardo Lucarelli also delivered good service in sequence, which found Iran’s passing in difficulty. The Brazilians ran their pipe plays well, while Iran started misfiring their attacks.

Iran improved in their play in the third set, by trying to manage the attacks of Yoandy Leal and Lucarelli with good defence. The Asian side nearly took the third set until Brazil coach Renan Dal Zotto called out a successful challenge on attack line fault. Lucarelli delivered back-to-back attacks to close out to Brazil’s favour.

Brazil continued to utilise Saatkamp’s momentum in the middle. Alan Souza and Leal delivered the crucial points, each scoring 16 points in the win.
