VIDEO Three Belgian triathletes on podium 70.3 Ironman from Lanzarote

With Alexandra Tondeur on two and Pieter Heemeryck and Kenneth Vandendriessche on two and three we got three Belgian pro-triathletes on the podium of the 70.3 Ironman Lanzarote on Saturday. Due to the strong current and high waves, swimming was canceled. But instead of turning it into a duathlon, cycling was started immediately and this resulted in a chaotic situation at the start of the pros and a lot of drafting at the start of the race. Frederic Funk and Emma Pallant won.
Hair clipper handsome second
Alexandra Tondeur was part of a leading group of three women who left early in the 90 km cycle. At first Jeanne Cologne was with us, but after 30 km Emma Pallant, Lucy Hall and Alexandra Tondeur remained in the front. The three ladies stayed together and exchanged 1'18 for Tessa Kortekaas and Jeanne Cologne. The rest of the field, including ITZU athlete Saleta Castro, lost more than twenty minutes and more.
Emma Pallant proved to be the fastest in the walk. In the first five kilometers, she already reached Hall and Tondeur for a minute and a half. A little past halfway Lucy Hall had to release. Pallant walked more than three minutes, but in the final phase Alexandra The Great came back to two minutes. Emma Pallant won the 90 km cycle and 21 km run in 4h08'14. Hair clipper came second in 4:10:36. Hall finished third in 4.11:23.
Chaotic images with start pros
The pros were with the men with a lot more and that caused chaotic images at the start. The athletes had to take a short run-up to take their bike bag in the change zone and put on their helmet and other supplies for the bike. As the Mark Buckingham tweet shows, a duathlon might have been a better solution:

"A completely different game with swimming"
That is what Pieter Heemeryck thought, who was disappointed after missing the only slot for the 70.3 Ironman World Championship in Taupo next year. “I will have to qualify for Taupo early next year, because there was only 1 slot in Lanzarote. With swimming there it was a completely different game. Although Funk was pretty good today. He skipped the World Championship in Nice and apparently focused on this period. He was already good at Zell-am-See and now too. And I didn't have Davos' walking legs. I have reached a minute, but I did not close the gap, "says Pieter.
"A lot of drafting in the beginning of cycling"
The trio athlete of the Domo-Scott team was not impressed by the start. “Ironman did drop a few stitches this week. The start was really chaotic and of course there was a lot of drafting, especially in the beginning of cycling. The group was just too big. I put myself at the forefront and when I looked back, it was really bad to see. Kenneth and I have done a lot of work, so it felt good. Funk looked a little more at the cat from the tree and attacked from behind. But he cycled firmly on a stretch with strong headwind. So in the end he is the deserved winner. It is just sour from the missed qualification for Taupo, "says Pieter.
Frederic Funk wins
The German Frederic Funk won the 90 km bike ride and 21 km walk in 3h35'00. Pieter Heemeryck took second place at 1'39. Kenneth Vandendriessche was third in 3:41:10 for Kevin Maurel and Felipe Azevedo. Pierre Balty was pretty seventh in 3:46:56. Hannes Callebaut became 21st in 4h12'28.
