For the past three years Schweinsteiger played in the US MLS at Chicago Fire. His contract ended with the end of the regular season after the 35-year-old had missed with his club again the play-offs. First, he left open the continuation of his career, now he draws a line.
With Schweinsteiger one of the most successful German players leaves the big football stage. As an 18-year-old he came in 2002 to the professional squad of Bayern Munich, which he had already joined in adolescence. In his 13 years with the Bavarians he celebrated a total of eight German championships and won the cup seven times. His biggest victory at club level was the triumph in the Champions League in 2013 in the "German final" in Wembley against Borussia Dortmund (2: 1).
In the national team Schweinsteiger came between 2004 and 2016 to 121 internationals (24 goals). This puts him in fourth place in Germany's record-breaking national team, with only Lothar Matthäus (150 caps), Miroslav Klose (137) and Lukas Podolski (130) ahead of him. He participated with the national team in three World Championships (2006, 2010 and 2014) and four European Championships (2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016).
